Canada wins pair of silvers in wrestling


Pune, India - Steven Takahashi, London, Ont., and Duncan Moffat, Milton, Ont., wrestled to a pair of silver medal performances at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Takahashi advanced to the final of the 50 kg event by pinning Australian Justin Holland in the quarterfinal round and Lucas Thomas of Namibia in the semi-final. The son of 1978 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Ray Takahashi was defeated in two rounds by gold medalist Parliram Kumar of India in the final.

Moffat opened the tournament downing New Zealander Ricky Welsford in the quarterfinal followed by a two-round victory over Ben Bellamy of England in the semi-final. He was pinned by Indian Rahul Aware in the final to earn his second international medal of the summer, having previously captured the silver at the Pan American championship in July.

Thomas Ostapowich of Regina finished fifth in the 54 kg category defeating Ebahim Henstock of South Africa before falling to Jitendra Hariprasad of India, followed by a loss to Muhammad Shaukat Mushtaq of Pakistan.
