Canada wins bronze in men's doubles table tennis


Pune, India – Qiang Shen, Ottawa, and Ling Kun Yang, St-Laurent, Que., defeated England 3-1 (11-8, 10-12, 11-3, 11-7) on Wednesday to win the men's doubles bronze medal in table tennis at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

“Our boys overcame illness today to win the bronze,” said Canadian coach Marles Martins, Gatineau, Que. “Ling has been sick with the flu, but he came back and played a great match with Qiang. I am very proud of them.”

Women’s table tennis _ Emmanuelle Lavoie, Terrebonne, Que. was eliminated in the women’s singles competition falling 0-4 (3-11, 4-11, 5-11, 8-11) to the second seeded Soumi Mondal of India; Peggy Hsien, Burnaby, B.C., and Emmanuelle Lavoie, Terrebonne, Que. rallied from a 2 games to none deficit to win their opening round women’s double’s match against Guyana 3-2 (4-11, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 12-10);

Men’s table tennis _ Top ranked Qiang Shen, Ottawa, won both of his matches to advance to the men’s singles semi-final. He opened the day with a 4-2 (11-6, 11-8, 1-11, 11-7, 10-12, 12-10) victory over Darren Chong of Signapore before knocking off David Powell of Australia 4-2 (11-9, 11-7, 3-11, 12-10, 10-12, 11-7). He will play Sathiyan Gnansekaran of India on Thursday; Ling Kun Yang, St-Laurent, Que., was eliminated in the round of 16 by lost to Soumyajit Ghosh of India in the round of 16.
