Pune 2008: Twardzik golden, Shamoon take silver

Pune, India - Stuart Twardzik, Big River, Sask., won the Commonwealth Youth Games middleweight boxing championship 5-0 over Satinder Satinder of India.

"This is the greatest experience of my life," said Twardzik following the bout.

He led 2-0 in the dying moments of the third round when he unleashed a pair of quick right jabs to take what would turn out to be an insurmountable 4-0 lead.

“I said to myself that I wanted to go after [Satinder] in the fourth and put the bout away and when he left himself open late, I was able to score a couple and now I have this awesome medal to take home.”

It was Canada’s second boxing medal of the day as Ben Shamoon, Kitchener, Ont., lost the welterweight final to Balwinder Beniwal of India in a judges’ decision.

“I fought a great bout today and I lost to [Beniwal] who is one of the best fighters in the world in our weight class, so for me, this feels like a gold medal,” said Shamoon.
