VOLUNTEER:

Commonwealth Games Canada invites nominations for the position of Chef de Mission of the Commonwealth Games Team in Glasgow, Scotland, July 23 - August 3, 2014.

The volunteer Chef de Mission must be available full-time to attend the Commonwealth Games from approximately: July 15 – August 6, 2014.  This position also requires a substantial time commitment from the time of appointment: June 2012 through to the Games in July/August 2014.

The role of the Chef is quite broad with both political and hands-on operational functions. The duties of the Chef will include, but not limited to: Participation in the 2014 Games, several pre-Games visitations to the host site, mission staff selection, partners and stakeholder meetings, mission staff meetings and regular conference calls, and in association with the CGC office, the development and implementation of the action plan for the Canadian Team Mission.  The successful applicant will be expected to participate fully in all phases of the preparation, administration and completion of the Games Mission.  Considerable time, effort and level of responsibility is required for this position, thus candidates are asked to carefully consider their nomination.

Qualifications and a job description are included with this Call for Nominations.  Candidates will be evaluated according to the qualifications outlined.  The interviews and selection of the Chef de Mission will take place in May 2012 with the successful candidate will be expected to assume responsibilities effectiveJuly2012.

QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB DESCRIPTION:

General Description:

The Chef de Mission (Chef) is the volunteer head of the Canadian Team attending the Commonwealth Games.

The Chef works closely with the CGC Director of Sport in the development, execution and evaluation of Games related strategies and plans.

As head of delegation, the Chef serves as the primary spokesperson for the Canadian Team and represents the Team and Commonwealth Games Canada with a variety of partners and stakeholders including but not limited to governments, national sport federations, performance partners, the host organizing committee and its partners, the Commonwealth Games Federation and its Association members

The Chef de Mission ensures the values and operating principles of Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) and of Canadian sport are evident throughout the Canadian Team.

The position of Chef de Mission for Commonwealth Games Teams is not open to individuals who have previously held this position.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • PreviousCommonwealthGames or other international games experience managing sport teams
  • Active linkage to the CGC
  • Demonstrated commitment to athletes and to creating an environment within which athletes and coaches can perform to the best of their abilities
  • Commitment to significant time and travel associated with this role
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively:
  • Exercise sound judgment
  • Plan and organize
  • Communicate in all capacities of the role, inclusive of media
  • Perform with poise and confidence in challenging and possible crisis situations
  • Work well with others; balancing the needs of the Team and the broader CGC family
  • Build and motivate high performing teams

Preferable:

  • Bilingual in Canada’s both official languages
  • Knowledge of CGC strategic framework, policies and issues

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES (PRE-GAMES, GAMES, POST GAMES):

  1. Represents and speaks at official functions and meetings as the Canadian Team representative.
  2. Provides strategic leadership and focus to the Canadian Team, in conjunction with CEO and the Director of Sport.
  3. With the Director of Sport, develops a strong leadership group to manage the Canadian Team mission.
  4. Oversees the execution of games planning and ensures the effective resolution of human resource and related issues.
  5. Supports the CGC in developing and maintaining effective partnerships with various stakeholders namely:
    1. NSOs - athletes; coaches; managers; other performance support staff
    2. Domestic performance partners and stakeholders – E.g. Government of Canada, Own the Podium, AthletesCAN, Coaches of Canada;
    3. International – Host Organizing Committee; the CGF; High Commission office, and member country team leadership
  6. Ensures support for Sport Teams dealing with any protests during the games.
  7. Maintains a positive relationship with the media and represents the Canadian Team in the event of any incidents.
  8. Liaises with CGC officials and NSO VIPs on site as appropriate.
  9. Prepares a final report for presentation to the CGC Board and membership.
  10. Oversees the co-ordination of all team events including all pre-games briefing sessions with Team coaches, managers and mission staff, staging, press conferences etc.
  11. Supports and contributes to the development and implementation of the broader CGC Mission.
  12. Performs other duties as required throughout the duration of the organization of the Games and Team.
