XX Commonwealth Games

Event Summary: 
A magnificent Opening Ceremony at Parkhead Stadium, situated next to the Athletes Village, will herald the start of 10 days of competition in 17 sports in the 20th Commonwealth Games. Hampden will be adapted to host the athletics programme for the Games. Other iconic venues within the city which will host Games events are the Armadillo (weightlifting), Kelvingrove (lawn bowls), and Ibrox (rugby 7s). Cathkin Braes will provide a stunning location for the mountain bike events. Boxing, gymnastics, judo, netball and wrestling will take place at the newly extended SECC and squash and table tennis will be held at Scotstoun Stadium. In the east end of the city, track cycling will take place in the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome with the badminton events being held in the new National Indoor Spoorts Arena (NISA). Hockey will take place on the new water based pitches to be constructed at Glasgow Green. Tollcross pool will host the swimming programme with diving being held slightly further afield in the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh. Strathclyde Park will be the venue for triathlon with shooting events taking place at the army range at Barry Buddon near Carnoustie.
