About the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games

The third third Commonwealth Youth Games will be held from October 12-18, 2008 in Pune, India, a city in the west Indian state of Maharashtra about 200-km south-east of Mumbai (former city of Bombay).

The first games were held in 2000 in Edinburgh, Scotland where 733 athletes from 14 countries vied for 483 medals in 8 sports (Athletics, Fencing, Gymnastics, Hockey, Lawn Tennis, Squash, Swimming and Weightlifting).

The second edition of the games was held in Bendigo, Australia in December 2004 with over 1000 athletes competing.

It is expected that more than 1300 athletes from 71 countries around the world will participate in the third Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008 in Pune.

Medal will be awarded in nine sports, including: Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

The Canadian delegation will be comprised of 59 athletes (ages 15-18) and mission staff of 11. The Youth Games will serve as a training ground for many of the athletes who will compete at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India and the 2012 Olympics in London, England.

Team Canada will depart from Pearson International Airport in Toronto on Tuesday October 7, 2008 and after a brief two-day team orientation session.

The Opening Ceremonies will take place on October 12, 2008 and will be followed by five days of competition (October 13th to 17th). The Games will end with the Closing Ceremonies on October 18, 2008.

During the Games, there will be a cultural exchange day, allowing athletes from all 71 competing nations and territories to meet and bond.

Team Canada will return home immediately following Closing Ceremonies.
