Commonwealth Games Canada Seeks Candidates for International Sport Administration Placements

OTTAWA, September 13, 2012 – Commonwealth Games Canada is looking for eight young Canadians who are passionate about sport to be part of its fifth team of Canadian SportWORKS Officers (CSOs) to go abroad under the innovative Capacity Support Program (CSP).
The CSP is a joint initiative of the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Canada. The program aims to build the organisational capacity of Commonwealth Games Associations and National Olympic Committees through 11-month placements of CSOs. CSOs strengthen their host organisations in a variety of functional areas, including games team preparations, marketing and communications, office procedures and sport development.
“Having participated in the program as a CSO in two different countries, I have firsthand experience of the positive impacts that CSP has on both the host organisation and the CSO,” says Colin Whitmee, Manager of International Programs for Commonwealth Games Canada. “CSOs gain work and life experiences that may not have been otherwise available as a young professional in the Canadian sport system.”
CSP placements are open to Canadians who have studied Sport Management, Sport Administration, Health, Physical Education, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics or Recreation at the postsecondary level. The CSO appointments are volunteer positions, but successful candidates will receive a financial package sufficient to cover all their costs, from pre-departure orientation to a debriefing upon their return to Canada. CSP Team 5 CSOs will be brought to Ottawa for a pre-departure training session from December 12th-14th. CSOs will depart for their host countries on January 11th, 2013, with their placement concluding in December of 2013. The host organisations for CSP 5 are:
- Anguilla Commonwealth Games Association
- Antigua and Barbuda Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association
- Botswana National Olympic Committee
- British Virgin Islands Olympic Committee
- National Amateur Sports Association of St Helena
- Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council
- St Vincent and the Grenadines National Olympic Committee
- National Olympic Committee of Zambia
