Commonwealth Games Canada is currently inviting applications for a position within its International Development through Sport (IDS) unit.

The International Internship Programs Officer will report to the Manager of International Programs, and will be responsible and accountable for the administration, development and implementation of CGC’s International Development through Sport internship programs. This position requires strong organizational and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. Strong technology skills and a working knowledge of French will be considered an asset. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Sport Management, International Development or the equivalent and have at least two years’ experience working in related fields.

This full-time, one-year position is based in Ottawa and may require overseas travel and/or irregular working hours. Salary is commensurate with experience, and the position includes a competitive benefits package.

Background:

International development through Sport (IDS) integrates development of sport and development through sport activities to build national sport system capacity and promote community and social development throughout the Commonwealth.

The International Internship Programs Officer administers the following programs:

  • The Capacity Support Program (CSP) was designed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) to augment the capacity of Commonwealth Games Associations (CGA’s) by supporting them with trained interns who carry out a wide range of administrative and Games preparation tasks.
  • The Alumni Engagement Program was established to cover IDS program areas focused on the sustainability of a CGC network across Canada. The AEP consists of 5 committees: Advocacy, Communications, Development through Sport in Canada, IDS Programs, and Fundraising.
  • The South2North program pairs Masters’ students from the University of Trinidad and Tobago with Canadian National Sport Organizations (NSOs) for a placement in Canada.
  • The Sport Leaders Abroad Program sends Canadian sport leaders (coaches, athletes and administrators) to train their counterparts in their fields/sports of expertise throughout Africa and the Caribbean.

Position Summary:

The International Internship Programs Officer is responsible and accountable for the development and implementation of the Capacity Support Program, the Alumni Engagement Program, the South2North Program and the Sport Leaders Abroad Program. This is a full-time, one-year position.

Key functions:

  1. International Development through Sport Internship Programs:

    Responsible for the development of selection, support and evaluation strategies for host organizations:

  • Develop, update and administer the application procedures for potential host organizations
  • Develop, update and administer evaluation tools for selection
  • Develop, update and administer needs assessments in collaboration with host organizations
  • Develop, update and administer Commonwealth Games Canada host agreements
  • Develop and update supervisory guidelines for on-site supervisors
  • Develop and implement framework for overall Mentor/Mentee program
  • Maintain strong links with host organizations both in Canada and internationally during the internship cycle

    Responsible for the development of intern selection, training, support and evaluation strategies:

  • Develop, update and administer the application procedures for potential interns
  • Develop, update and administer evaluation tools for selection
  • Provide ongoing support to all interns
  • Develop, update, administer and co-facilitate intern training pathway, including pre-departure training, general orientation (on-site), midterm (on-site) and debrief
  • Develop, update and maintain reporting procedures for interns
  • Develop, update and administer intern agreements
  • Assist and monitor interns to develop work plans
  • Develop, update and maintain intern evaluation guidelines
  • Update and administer the intern safety policies
  • Stay current of government travel advisories to ensure interns are not at risk
  • Provide job search support for interns during and after the overseas portion of their internships
  • Provide communications training to interns

    Responsible for development and evaluation of the international Internship Programs:

  • Contribute to and monitor general guiding principles for programs
  • Establish and monitor annual work plans and critical paths for Internship Programs
  • Develop and implement evaluation framework
  • Ensure the capture and implementation of lessons learned from research

    Alumni engagement and support:

  • Develop and maintain a database of IDS program interns
  • Develop and implement framework for overall Alumni program including mentoring program, fundraising, Canadian awareness
  1. Responsible for providing support to the IDS Unit for promotions and communications:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of an annual communications plan for international Internship Programs
  • Support the update of the CGC/IDS website, social networking and e-newsletters specific to international Internship Programs
  • Assist in the identification of and preparations for promotional opportunities (i.e. conferences) for IDS Internship Programs and IDS activities, including promotional tools and pieces
  • Represent Internship Programs at meetings, conferences and seminars as requested
  • Organize annual reception for interns, funding partners and the press
  • Responsible for communication with interns regarding their placement
  • Responsible to seek concurrence with CGC Programs and Partnership Officers on any communication with delivery partners
  • Monitor and record all Internship Program communications and activities
  1. Support to the Financial Management of the IDS and Fundraising
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a strategy for the identification of program funders and funds
  • Work with Manager to develop annual internship program budgets
  • Monitor monthly expenses
  • Oversee administration of intern financing
  • Assist in the development of funding proposals for Internship Programs
  • Document and allocate codes for expenditures as relevant
  • Prepare funding rationales and supporting documents for budget requests
  • Ensure adherence to project management systems, contractual agreements and financial systems
  1. Support to the Manager, IDS unit and CGC
  • Complete Personal Work Plans and provide accurate and up-to-date reports that contribute to the Unit Work Plan
  • Assist in the integration of the Internship Programs work plan into the overall IDS work plan
  • Prepare reports and briefing notes and meeting summaries as required
  • Prepare program and progress reports for Manager of International Programs and partners as required
  • Monitor and analyze current political and development issues in relation to regions and advise Manager of International Programs
  • Assist in the preparation of reports for the IDS Reference Committee and the CGC Board of Directors
  • Support the Manager of International Programs as required
  • Keep the Manager of International Programs informed of the current status of Internship Programs and informed of key issues involving the programs, interns and/or partners
