Morgan, Black strike gold on final day of gymnastics at Commonwealth Games

Vancouver’s Scott Morgan won his second gold medal in as many days and Ellie Black of Halifax added gold and bronze to an earlier silver to cap a strong Canadian showing on the final day of the gymnastics competition Friday at the Commonwealth Games.

Morgan, rock steady again after winning the rings event on Thursday, cruised to the top of the podium in the vault final with a score of 14.733 points.

Kristian Thomas of England was second with 14.499 points and Wah Toon Hoe of Singapore was third at 14.195.

Morgan, who also won a silver medal on floor and a bronze in the team event earlier at the Games, will head home with a total of four medals.

"It's been awesome,” said Morgan. “You want to do well and for it to never end. It's been a fantastic games and Glasgow has done a great job."

Kevin Lytwyn of Stoney Creek, Ont., also had a strong finish, adding a bronze medal in the high bar final to the silver he wonon Thursday on rings.

"This is my first Games so just to go up last in the whole competition and hit the routine, get a medal for it, is just incredible,” said Lytwyn. 

“High bar is one of my best events so I knew if I hit my routine, I would have a good shot at a medal."
Anderson Loran of Saskatoon also competed in the high bar final but fell twice attempting difficult release moves and had to settle for eighth place.

In the women’s competition, Black earned the elusive gold medal she had been chasing with a blowout victory in the beam final.

Black scored scored 14.900 points followed by silver medallist Mary Ann Monckton of Australia (13.666) and bronze medallist Georgina Hockenhull of Wales (13.466).

Black also won bronze in the floor final to add to an earlier silver on vault, giving her a complete medal set from the final two days of competition.

England's Claudia Fragapane won gold on floor and Australia's Lauren Mitchell took silver.

"I was super excited for both my performances today,” said Black. “I was thinking more about coming in and trying to hit my routines the way I wanted to and show what I can do. To finish off with some medals was amazing."

Rounding out the Canadian results, Isabela Onyshko of Minnedosa, Man., placed seventh on beam and Stefanie Merkle of Petersburg, Ont., was fourth on floor.
