13 Canadians in action tomorrow as athletics (track and field) begins at the Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW, Scotland – The Canadian athletics team is set and ready for the 2014 Commonwealth Games with thirteen Canadians in action on Day 1 of athletics competition.

Kicking things off is Lanni Marchant of London, Ont., who will race through the streets of Glasgow in the women’s marathon at 9:30 a.m. In 2013 Lanni set a new Canadian record of 2 hours and 28 minutes. Lanni also holds the Canadian half marathon mark that she established earlier this year.

Both the men’s and women’s 100-metres will see opening rounds with Canadians Khamica Bingham of Caledon, Ont., Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ont., Jared Connaughton of New Haven, P.E.I., Shai-Anne Davis of Richmond, B.C., Crystal Emmanuel of East York, Ont., and Dontae Richards-Kwok of Toronto, Ont. Brown and Richards-Kwok were part of the bronze medal team in the 4x100-metres men's relay at the 2013 World Championships. Brown and Connaughton were members of the 2012 Olympic Games team.

Bingham, Davis and Emmanuel all were part of the women's relay team that broke the Canadian record last year at the World Championships. Emmanuel is the reigning Canadian champion over 100-metres.

Men’s shot put qualification will see Tim Nedow of Brockville, Ont., and Justin Rodhe of Kamloops, B.C., trying to secure a spot in the final. Rodhe is a 2012 Olympian while Tim represented Canada at the 2013 World Championships.

2012 Olympian Mohammed Ahmed of St. Catharines, Ont., will be at the start for the final of the men’s 5000-metres.

Making their first major games debut are Fawn Dorr of Marten River, Ont., and Audrey Jean-Baptiste of Montreal, Que., in the women’s 400-metres heats.

Reigning Commonwealth Games champion Sultana Frizell of Perth, Ont., will start her title defense in women’s hammer throw qualification. In 2010 Sultana set the Commonwealth Games record on her way to gold. This season Frizell has already set a new Canadian record.
