TABLE TENNIS CANADA NOMINATES SIX ATHLETES TO THE GLASGOW 2014 CANADIAN TEAM

Three Olympians to lead Canada’s table tennis team in Glasgow

ottawa – Table Tennis Canada and Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) today confirmed the six athletes named to Team Canada for the XXth Commonwealth Games in Glasgow Scotland in July.

Canadian Olympians Eugene Wang, Andre Ho and Mo Zhang will guide Canada’s men’s and women’s table tennis teams in to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. “Our younger athletes will face a steep learning curve at the Games,” said Tony Kiesenhofer, director general of Table Tennis Canada. “There are, however, are some legitimate medal chances in the women’s singles for Mo Zhang, the winner of the 2013 Commonwealth Championships in Delhi, India.”

Eugene Wang also had a very successful 2013 where he reached #62 in the world ranking and qualified for the 2013 ITTF World Tour Grand Finals. Wang is currently training in Saarbrücken, Germany.

“The Canadian table tennis team in Glasgow will be a great mix of veterans and rookies, says Team Canada Chef de Mission, Chantal Petitclerc. “I look forward to seeing them compete in Glasgow and welcome them to the 2014 Commonwealth Games Team.”

Athletes nominated by Table Tennis Canada to Team Canada for the 2014 Commonwealth Games are:

  • Betty Guo - Shen Yang, China / Edmonton, AB
  • Andre Ho - Richmond, B.C.
  • Anqi Luo - Mississauga, ON
  • Pierre-Luc Thériault - Rimouski, QC
  • Eugene Zhen Wang - Shi Jia Zhuang, China / Ottawa, ON
  • Mo Zhang – Shi Jia Zhuang, China / Vancouver, BC

“The table tennis athletes named today to Canada’s 2014 Commonwealth Games team are very deserving of this honour,” said the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport). “Your fellow Canadians will be cheering you on at every stage of your journey. Good luck in your final preparations and in the table tennis tournament in Glasgow!”

A team of 265 athletes and close to 100 coaches and support staff will be in Glasgow, Canada’s largest Team ever fielded for a non-home Games. 

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be held from July 23rd to August 3rd, 2014, and will be the largest ever multi-sport event held on Scottish soil.
