Victoria-Kayen Woo wins bronze medal at Massilia International meet in France

MARSEILLE -- Victoria-Kayen Woo of Montreal won a bronze medal in the uneven bars on Sunday at the Massilia International gymnastics meet.

Woo, who placed 15th on Saturday in the all around event, earned Canada’s only medal of the competition with a score of 13.533 in the uneven bars final.

Louise Vanhille of France and Ekatarina Kramarenko of Russia both won the gold with identical scores of 14.067 points.

Natalie Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., the top Canadian in the all around in fifth spot, finished fifth with 12.533 points.

Vaculik also qualified for the beam final and placed fourth, just .033 points behind bronze medallist Evgeniya Shelgunova of Russia.

Larisa Iordache of Romania, the European champion on beam, topped the field for her only gold medal of the meet.

Canada’s only other gymnast to reach an event final was 2013 Canadian junior champion Shallon Olsen of Coquitlam, B.C., who just missed winning bronze in the vault competition.

In the closest battle of the meet Alla Sosnitskaya of Russia placed first with 14.700 points, followed by runner-up Iordache with 14.650, Elissa Downie of Great Britain in third with 14.600 and Olsen in fourth at 14.500.
